Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1880’s in Germany. It is a body conditioning routine that focuses on the co-ordination of mind, body and spirit to develop a strong core. This is achieved by emphasising spinal and pelvic alignment, breathing and improving co-ordination and balance.

Pilates developed his system by taking principles from Yoga, Martial Arts, Boxing and Weight Lifting and selecting the best of these to improve the body.

It uses a holistic approach to develop the complete co-ordination of mind, body and spirit. The Pilates philosophy is that control of the mind is required for control of the body.
It is about quality not quantity or load of movements – using the correct muscles at the correct time to produce real results in suppleness, muscular power, endurance and good posture; it is through this that Pilates can help to alleviate pain.
